Has anyone had any luck reproducing this look? If so, what hair product did you use, etc? I'm thinking of doing this for my wedding to go with my 1920's era dress!

Re: Finger Waves?
Wed, July 27, 2005 - 8:03 PMI'm getting married Sept. 17th. I've seen a number of instructions with photo's including one from the Feb/Mar issue of BUST. How short is too short? My hair is sort of a bob. I just wanted to know if anyone had luck or tips. It looks very time consuming and you need a buddy to help. Here's a helpful website: www.nocturne.com/swing/hair/hair.html

Re: Finger Waves?
Fri, October 21, 2005 - 10:11 AMhi, my name is liz. im almost thru w/ my cosmetology school. to create fingerwaves it is best done with short hair and A LOT OF WATER AND GEL. that is the key to keep ur style in place. you create the waves in a c shape using a rat tail comb and ur finger to create ridges around ur head. u start on the left side and create a ridge to crown of ur head then u create an identical ridge on the right side but take it all the way around ur head in a horse shoe to connect under ur first ridge. always begin the new ridge on the side u stopped forming c's to the front then to the back on the next row. i hope i got this to u in time for ur wedding. im getting married myself soon i know how important it is! if u need more advice reply! -

Re: Finger Waves?
Wed, October 26, 2005 - 4:38 PMThis is great, i want to perfect the art of finger waves, pin curls and retro stying. Practicing on friends seems to be the best way to learn, i find it so hard to do my own hair. -

Tue, November 8, 2005 - 7:34 AMThat link is great. I never had finger waves for my wedding, but my hair looked retro all the same. I think we ladies should all bring this look back!

Re: Finger Waves?
Mon, April 10, 2006 - 3:25 PMi have done many many finger waves in beauty school. you really need to have layered hair (one length is impossible). get the hair wet, but not dripping, and apply thick hair gel. work with a small amount of hair at a time so that there are not "breaks" in your waves. find a hairstylist who is skilled at this for your wedding. it would be impossible to do your whole head yourself. also you can find out ahead of time if you like the look on you. the waves can be combed out when completely dry for a different look, perhaps for your reception. -

Re: Finger Waves?
Mon, April 10, 2006 - 3:52 PMHey,
I wanna know how it went! I was a flapper for halloween this past one and was so close to doing the finger wave but it looked so complicated. At the time, my hair was longer so I got a wig and that inspired me just to cut my hair into a bob. I'm getting married next spring and want finger wave hair. This thread is awesome!
thanks!

Thu, July 13, 2006 - 4:42 PMWell? How did it go????
I'm flying to Perth today to get my hair and makeup trials done for my wedding there in March 07. One of the hair dressers says it will be really hard to do, the other says there wont be any trouble. I look forward to seeing teh results!
I'll keep you posted too. -

Re: Finger Waves?
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 8:49 AMI have a 1920's wedding myself. I didn't really need fingerwaves as my headpiece covered most of my hair. See here:

I also started a vintage hair group on flickr and I scan all the tutorials, advertisements, etc for 1920's hair.

From personal experience trying fingerwaves on myself.... This is what has sorta worked out best.
I use flax gel made just by boiling flax for 5 min. and straining out the water to use as gel. I use these instructions to fingerwave:
www.vividinfinity.com/fingerwave/
It takes TONS of practice. I've practiced 100x over since I was about 15. I am now 24. I really find the trick is getting that finger smashed to your head and scrapping the comb into the hair and along the finger to direct those ridges. Those ridges are key. They force the hair into a wave. Then you have to make a V with your fingers and smoosh the hair after the comb down and in place. It's better shown than said. Still, it is a very frusterating process. In the end, I wish I could just find a hair dresser who could set my hair and that would be that!
I usally sleep in my wave clamps. It takes a long time to dry. I need a bonnet dryer to test out, but I still think I'd be sitting under it for an hour or so.
Anyways, if any Bay Area girls every want to email me about flapperishness, I can be reached at mars@boudoirdoll.com
